National pension system.

Aliens who live in Japan are required to join the national pension system.

(1) Procedures to join

People who have registered under the alien registration in age of 20 or more, and age under 60 are required to participate the national pension system. Application to join the pension system can be made in city hall by individuals.
However, for those who are employed by any Japanese entities are required to participate the social security pension system, and they are not required to participate the national pension system.

(2) Participants of national pension system are eligible to receive pension benefits, provided they satisfy the following requirements:

  • When they become a handicap: Handicap basic pension.
  • When the participant had passed away: The bereaved basic pension.
  • When the participant become old age: Aged basic pension.
  • When pension is not payable due to short participation: Lump sum payment for termination.

(3) Pension insurance premium:

The monthly premium is 13,860 yen from April, 2006.
