Medical system in Japan.

(1) How to get medical services.

If it is your first visit to the medical service, you will be required to fill initial medical examination form at the time of visit. If you wish to use your health insurance for the medical service, you need to present your health insurance certificate. Failure to do so will result in full charges for the service.

  • Health insurance certificate.
  • Passport or ID card (if you are covered by student abroad insurance or travelers insurance).
  • Cash. (Payment for medical service is accepted only by cash.)
  • A memo of your address and telephone number.

(2) General procedures for medical examination at a hospital.

  1. Inform receptionist which department you wish to have health examination, provided with your health insurance certificate, if you are covered by the health insurance.
  2. After some paperwork is completed, you should receive a hospital identification. Then submit the hospital identification to the department that you will be examined, and wait until your name is called.
  3. When your name is called, enter the doctor's office to commence medical examination.
  4. After your health examination ends, pay examination fees at the counter.
  5. From the 2nd time and onward, you will be able to go directly to the doctor's office to drop your hospital identification card there, and wait until your name is called.

(3) Medical institutions for foreign languages are available

It is very difficult for patients to get medical treatment without understanding the language. Mie International Exchange Foundation has arranged medical institutions where medical service is available in foreign languages so that foreigners living in Mie may receive medical service without any concern.
